About
The PPI Pact in Magdalena includes the municipalities of Zona Bananera, Ciénaga, Aracataca and Fundación, which together add up to an area of 448,397 ha. Approximately 21% of this area belongs to the Sierra Nevada National Park, which implies high opportunities for conservation and the development of strategies for sustainable production. It is estimated that 15.7% of the area should be allocated to conservation, 63.8% should have potential for agroforestry and protection, and 18% for agriculture. The area has 69,424 ha of native forest. The main commodities of this territory are bananas and palm oil, with 10,786 ha and 20,280 ha of planted area respectively. Other commodities produced in the area include coffee, mango, maize and cassava, which have become an opportunity for small farmers to improve the family economy. The department of Magdalena has one of the most important ports in Colombia, mobilizing around 2,777,953 tons in exports that include products such as bananas, palm oil and coffee, among others. This port provides a competitive advantage to the Magdalena PPI in terms of infrastructure and development. Some initiatives, which have been developed in the region in recent years, have strengthened the articulation between the actors of the territory. These initiatives have mainly been linked to water management, one of them is the collective action of water stewardship led by WWF, which brings together different actors in the conservation of the basin and water resources. Other actors working on sustainable agricultural practices and watershed protection include Fedeplama, the Embassy of the Netherlands, FAO and the Embassy of the United Kingdom, among others.
